In the Netherlands, 400,000 people suffer from eczema. Eczema causes redness, but the main symptom is itching, which can be extremely severe – and sometimes even so intense that it becomes unbearable. As a result, the quality of life of many patients is negatively affected on a daily basis.
Current treatments have limitations. They are time-consuming and can cause serious side effects such as nausea, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of infections or cancer. Consequently, approximately 80% of patients are dissatisfied with their current treatment and are actively seeking alternatives. Moreover, conventional traditional UV phototherapy is based on mercury technology that is banned in Europe.
Fortunately, we have the solution: high-intensity medical blue light therapy. This therapy is completely UV-free, so there is no risk of skin cancer. It is drug-free, meaning there are no side effects.
Multiple studies have shown that blue light therapy is both safe and highly effective, with a reduction in itching of up to 85% within two weeks. Blue light is at least as effective as traditional UV therapy and 5 to 10 times cheaper than the new medications.
Phlecs already has a professional device on the market, which is used in European dermatology clinics. Additionally, in collaboration with a Dutch consortium, we are developing a device for home use. This patented device will improve ease of use for the patient. Patients can receive their treatment whenever and wherever they want.
